2017 | Freshman Year: (Written by Makéla) John and I met on the very first day of freshman year of college. My roommate, Ellie, and I were having lunch in the dining hall when John and his roommates asked to come sit with us. John and I bonded over having to turn our computers sideways to complete our freshman writing seminar homework. The next day, we realized we were in the same class and quickly became great friends, partly due to John asking me to print out his homework in the library every single day after class. He still swears he had "technical difficulties" that prevented him from using the school printers. In classic fashion, after about one week, John was the only one in the class who still did the homework. John had no idea no one else was doing the readings, and continued to have a 1:1 discussion with our professor every class for the rest of the semester. We started to spend more time together as the year went on, working in the library, hanging with our roommates and attending several fraternity date nights together. 2018 | Sophomore Year: We continued into sophomore year much as we had ended the previous year– friends and the occasional date night partners. Once we returned from winter break, much to my surprise, KK and Isabel burst into my room and yelled, “Sorry to ruin it, but John DeMoully just called and wants to set up candles in our room to ask you to be his girlfriend. Do you want us to stop him...?" Sure enough, John showed up hours later, candles and flowers in hand… 2019 | Junior Year: (Written by John) Our first test of "long distance" came during the summer of junior year. Makéla moved to NYC for a summer internship while I stayed in Ithaca pretending to work. We spent many weekends traveling back and forth to see each other. Once we got back to Cornell, we were basically inseparable during the fall semester, including over Thanksgiving when I traveled to meet her family in Columbus for the first time. Thankfully, I managed to impress her parents with my Jeopardy skills and ardent passion for The Ohio State Buckeyes and was graciously permitted to return over winter break to wish Makéla off for her semester abroad in Barcelona. Our second test at long distance continued in the spring semester, while Makéla studied in Barcelona. At the beginning of the semester and on Makéla's 21st birthday, I received my cancer diagnosis. I took the semester off of school and went back to Denver for my treatment. 2020 | Senior Year: Once Makéla returned from her study abroad program and I was healthy again, we moved in together for the first time during our internships in the City. I was so ecstatic to have her back, I hardly even noticed the cramped living arrangements. That summer was awesome – our first time living in the City together. Eventually, we made our way back to Cornell to finish out our senior year. We even managed to sign up for a couple of classes together. And don't worry, Makéla still offered to print my homework. 2021-2022 | New York: (Written by Makéla) After a year and a half of working remotely and bouncing around in Ohio, Colorado, and Florida during COVID, John and I finally made it back to New York City to start our careers in person. New York City was a special time that we got to spend with so many Cornell friends, high school friends, and my brothers. 2022-Present | California: I visited Lottie and fell in love with San Francisco. In July of 2022, I made the move out, and eventually in July of 2023, John moved out too. We found a new apartment together and have been there since. In November 2024, John and I got engaged at the top of Mt. Tamalpais. In San Francisco, we love biking, camping, lounging in the park, spending time with our amazing friends, and exploring Northern California. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do :)
